There’s something more intimate when fewer players are involved in a basketball game. The BIG3 Basketball league on FOX Sports 1 aims to perfect that vision.
BIG 3 Basketball is the brainchild of Ice Cube. He brings back NBA players of yesteryear to battle in 3-on-3 half-court games. Each of the eight teams has five or six players on their roster.
The rules are similar to regular basketball rules. Fouls count, shooting behind the arc is worth three points and there is strategy involved.
Each team has former NBA players and Hall-of-Famers leading their roster as coaches, such as Julius Erving, Clyde Drexler and Gary Payton. Even captains are appointed to each team.
Now comes what makes them stand out. It’s more than just 3-on-3 basketball.
The games are worth two halves, with the first half ending when one team has 30 points. Games end when one team reaches 60 points.
The league also introduces the four-point shot, which is located 30 feet from the basket at three separate spots.
Subtle differences include fouls. There are no personal fouls, but each foul is credited to the team. Foul shots are worth two points instead of one.
BIG3 Basketball works when it honors a callback to the stars of old. Allen Iverson is the most recognizable name in this league, playing for “3’s Company”.
He’s not the only name you’ll recognize, however. Chauncey Billups, Rashad Evans and Jermaine O’Neal are just a few of the names participating in this league.
It brings a good type of feeling reminiscing about past players in a new light. That’s where it succeeds the most; heir physical style of play matches a ruggedness that can be sorely missed in today’s NBA.
Make no mistake; this is a far cry from the NBA.
Some players opt for their nicknames on the back of their jerseys instead of their last names. Iverson goes by his nickname “The Answer”. Billups uses “Mr. Big Shot,” while Jason Williams goes by his familiar “White Chocolate” moniker.
This brings a street philosophy in identity, which is exactly what Ice Cube intended. It allows a closer atmosphere for fans to have with these stars of yesterday. These aren’t just All-Stars playing. Some of them are former world champions!
BIG3 Basketball is definitely worth your while, basketball fans. It fills the void of the NBA while having you remember the encounters these players had nearly a decade ago. BIG3 Basketball is doing wonders for the basketball fan and the game itself. It’s only just begun.
