One thing’s for sure: we should be thanking Lavar Ball for the right reason. Although, it’s not exactly what you think.
Lavar Ball leads the charge for his son, Lonzo Ball. His son has declared for the NBA Draft and is expected to be chosen by an NBA team. He’s just having trouble getting a few endorsement deals done.
Nike, Under Armour and Adidas reportedly turned down Lonzo Ball on Friday, April 28, 2017. His father confirmed the news as well as sources from ESPN.
Many are blaming Lavar for this setback, and rightfully so. He hasn’t been doing himself any favors.
Lavar Ball’s behavior has been embarrassing at least. Take his second appearance on ESPN’s First Take. Before the commercial break, he walked towards the set like a buffoon and wearing his “BBB” shirt. That stands for “Big Baller Brand,” Lavar Ball’s startup company. Lonzo followed his father with his hood up. The most intriguing thing is Lonzo’s face. It can be misconstrued as fatigue, but it almost looks like fear.
Perhaps we can delve deeper into this? Why would Lonzo Ball want his father around if his father is going to act selfish in public?
Therein lies the problem; Lavar Ball is THAT parent. That parent you see in kids’ games who swears their kid is the best? Yes, that’s THAT parent.
And now it’s costing his son millions. Nike is the brand everybody wants to be in, and it currently has LeBron James among them.. Under Armour and Adidas also draw in big names as well with Stephen Curry and James Harden representing those brands, respectively.
It’s a huge hit for the Ball family and the brand they’ve tried to establish. Maybe they should take lessons from the greats they claim to be better than.
A prime example would be Michael Jordan. He always wanted his father, James, there to watch as many games as possible. They had a close relationship up until his father passed away on July 23, 1993.
James Jordan never embarrassed Michael or made it about himself. He was proud of his son and what would he become.
That’s how a responsible parent should act. Let their kids play the game without any distractions.
Now, there is a side that parents should look out for when it comes to their kids. That’s making sure they stay on a good path.
Unfortunately, there are many that want to take advantage of the athlete. That list ranges from family to friends.
Good examples playing against said type are LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
James’ friends and family are very successful. James’ close friends have been thriving on their own as successful businessmen.
Curry grew up in an NBA landscape. He knows how to handle the spotlight. His family is also doing very well.
This brings us to a key point. It’s very important to be involved in your child’s time in sports. Just don’t get involved at the cost of their time in the spotlight.
Be their watchdog and keep them on a great path. It is not the parent’s duty to take that spotlight away from their kids.
It’s a shame nobody told Lavar Ball that.
