Welcome back sports fans to today’s sports update; I’m your host Sebastian Maldonado bringing you the hottest news in sports that keeps everyone wanting more. It’s time for the NBA off-season.
Free-agency period has officially begun; LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony all re-signed with their teams respectively. A new face is in Chi-town, and it’s courtesy of the Detroit Pistons. Ben Wallace has officially signed with the enemy. The Chicago Bulls signed the big man for a 4-year deal. Peja Stoyokovic also signed with the New Orleans Hornets for 3 years. Rumor has it that a few teams are interested in “the Kid” Kevin Garnett. Yet, Minnesota GM Kevin McHale told every team that he’s not for sale. Will he change his mind or is this a dead issue? Plus, how about those Knicks? I’ll leave it for that.
The first half of the major league baseball season has been a success. The All-Star weekend was a blast as a congrats are in order to all the All-Stars that played in the game and the HR derby, which Ryan Howard beat David Wright by a total score (including all rounds) of 23 to 22; quote, “Holy Cow!!!” (Phil Rizutto). Yet, the issue in the American League is that 3 of the best 4 teams will be in the postseason while one is left out playing golf.
The following four teams have overcome so much. The Boston Red Sox are on top of the AL East, and they have two dangerous weapons: David Ortiz & their closer Jonathan Papelbon. The New York Yankees are fighting wounded but are still in the hunt thanks to young guys like Melky Cabrera and Chien Meing-Wang to name a few. The Detroit Tigers have improved the most from being the worst to being the best in the majors. The defending World Series Champions, the Chicago White Sox, have been stronger than ever with the acquisition of Jim Thome. Despite their strongest efforts, there is only room for three. The AL West makes this happen because they WILL have a representative in the postseason. None of these teams are a sure bet because of this situation. So it comes down to three open spots within about 2 1/2 months of more baseball. Even Alex Rodriguez admitted that the AL Wild Card will not be from the East division. The seriousness of this problem is surreal. In the end, no one will be happy, fans lose out, and baseball suffers a blow that no one expected: a team will be snubbed out of the fall classic before it even begins.
Well, that’s it for today, but before I go, I would like to thank ESPN for making kids’ dreams come true. They teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make sure that they meet their favorite atheletes and favorite team. Among the atheletes that participated are Donovan McNabb, Tedy Bruschi, Todd Helton, Jeff Gordon, and Kobe Bryant.
