Observations: Yankee Stadium (Day 2)

Monday August 1, 2011

It was Day 2 at Yankee Stadium for me yesterday. The Yanks’ outcome was different than my last outing (see https://sebastiantsu.wordpress.com/2011/07/24/observations-yankee-stadium/), as they beat the Orioles 4-2. Freddy Garcia got the win while Jake Arrieta lost, and Mariano Rivera picked up his 27th save of the season. Here’s what I noticed during the game.

  1. The fans didn’t seem into this game until the Yankees trailed by one in the third inning. Maybe the weather played a factor. Maybe they took the Orioles lightly, especially after the beating the O’s took in the second game of last Saturday night’s doubleheader. The Yankees also swept that doubleheader with a combined score of 25-6. The fans woke up after the bottom of the fourth. Brett Gardner came up in the fourth with the bases loaded and cleared them with an RBI triple.
  2. The fans love their stars, and that didn’t change yesterday. The support for their Yankees was evident when Derek Jeter took a fastball to the right middle finger in the bottom of the third. X-Rays were negative as Jeter is day-to-day.
  3. Mariano Rivera got the loudest reaction. The minute “Enter Sandman” plays, the crowd cheers in unison. Rivera picked up another save, making it his 586th of his career. That’s 14 shy of 600, 15 shy of Trevor Hoffman’s record of 601 saves. Will Rivera become the new all time saves leader this year or next? Only time will tell…

Not much to report, but it was great to step into Yankee Stadium again. Hopefully, I’ll bring you more experiences from other venues. See you next time, sports fans.

Yours Truly,

Sebastian Maldonado

  1. True what you wrote that in the beginning of the game the crowd was dead. Maybe the humidity was a factor. As for me, I was there + so happy for the win and always so impressed by the Sandman….but most rewarding was being there with my niece + nephews….that was Priceless 🙂
