The UFC returns tomorrow with a PPV that shouldn’t disappoint. Their 117th showing features four intriguing fights. In the heavyweight division, Roy Nelson and Junior Dos Santos will fight to determine who moves up the ranks in that overcrowded weight class. In the welterweight division, Ricardo Almeda wants revenge over Matt Hughes for his victory over Renzo Gracie. Welterweights Jon Fitch and Thiago Alves will fight in their rematch in the co-main event. The main event is for the Middleweight Championship. The defending champion, Anderson Silva, will take on challenger Chael Sonnen. It is the biggest fight in Sonnen’s career, and it also might be the biggest for Anderson Silva.
Time for the magic man to take over!
Silva is the current and longest reigning UFC Champion in history. He dominated middleweights Chris Leben and Rich Franklin to win the belt in 2006. He holds the longest winning streak in UFC history. Silva moved up to the light-heavyweight division twice and beat James Irvin and Forrest Griffin by knockout. He ran over nearly the entire middleweight division. Yet, he became the most hated man in the sport.
Silva’s last few fights showcased him showboating. He didn’t seem threatened and made a fool of his opponents. By “dancing” in the ring, he’s humiliated his boss in Dana White and the UFC fans. White became furious in each of Silva’s last few fights. Even his knockout of Forrest Griffin was viewed disappointing. White even threatened stripping Silva of the middleweight title. He hopes Silva arrives for tomorrow’s fight and hopes the competition makes him show the “real” Anderson Silva.
Chael Sonnen is the latest man to step up and fight Silva for the title. He taunted Silva since the fight was announced and appears hungry for the belt. Three videos have been showcased on YouTube of Sonnen’s hype machine and his insults of the middleweight champion (not for everyone):
Sonnen wants the middleweight title, but he’s been talking about it. Here’s hoping the bite is as big as the bark. Let’s also hope Sonnen didn’t awaken a sleeping giant in Anderson Silva. All Dana White wants is a great main event. He wants the fans to get their money’s worth. What’s wrong with that? Just ask Anderson Silva. Here’s hoping this fight will be raved as a fight and not a spectacle.
